As we live, garbage is produced continuously, and landfills where garbage is buried are indispensable places. However, garbage landfills have a negative side, for being smelly and dirty. So we would like to get away from landfill.
Unlike the past, landfills are sanitarily reclaimed, and designs are applied to make park-like images. In addition, garbage is being used to produce renewable energy, and it has also a role as an electricity supplier.
Above all, by using the odor of the landfill, biogas and land fill gas could be collected and used for fuel and power generation, and it is possible to produce electricity by replacing fossil fuel, and it also has the effect of reducing the odor.
In addition, places where garbage has been landfilled are being used as golf courses, parks and solar power generation sites through infrastructure construction and cases of showing new aspects of garbage landfills are increasing.
The metropolitan garbage landfill located in Incheon is the largest landfill in the world and is being transformed into a place to utilize renewable energy.
It generates KRW 35.3 billion in annual revenues from the power generated by landfill gas and also generated KRW 45.3 billion in profits by selling some of the 7.36 million tons of CERs (Certified Emission Reduction) that were recycled from the environmental pollutants.
According to the US Environmental Office’s statistics for 2012, it has estimated that 750 million tons of garbage is landfilled or thrown away somewhere in the world each year. If the trash is made, we require some land to bury and the landfill will continue to increase.
