[Solar energy in rural communities]
Can we grow any livestock or plants under solar farms?
Solar power plants are mostly located on flat and sunny grounds. This condition is the same as the land where the livestock and the plants are raised. Because the solar photovoltaic equipment can be installed away from the ground relatively, the lower part of the PV panel can be fully exploited.
In case of solar farms in rural areas, we are making efforts to raise livestock and plants along with solar farm on the same site. In case of UK solar farms, they have succeeded in bringing small animals such as sheep, goats, chickens and turkeys in a solar farm and they use it actively. In Korea, the solar farms with the sciophyte such as mountain garlic and mushrooms, etc. are well known. In Japan, a rice paddy which is a representative sunshade plant has also been successfully developed along with solar power generation.
Because the agriculture and the stock raising are possible in a solar farm at the same time as electric power generation, we can solve problems of eating as well as improving profitability in rural areas.
The only disadvantage of solar farms is that we must resolve misunderstandings about solar power plants. Solar power plants have few impacts on electromagnetic waves and they don’t have any negative impact. In addition, if the sunlight sharing technology developed in Japan will enable to manage sunny plants and solar power farms, it can be the best business model in rural areas.
